New Year New Partnerships
The Company’s beloved Encore enters its eighth year in active repertory. Since its premiere at New York’s Joyce SoHo in 2007, there has never been a year when the work has not been performed, and by multiple companies, not only by DGDC. It was prescient of The New Yorker to write at that time: “Encore is both the title of Gwirtzman’s new dance suite and the response it’s likely to inspire.”
This winter, Encore will be performed by The University at Buffalo‘s dance department and by Terpsichord, the first high school contemporary dance company in Tennessee and a signature program of the acclaimed Girls Preparatory School in Chattanooga. GPS dance has historically been a model program for dance education throughout the country. We are excited to be working with nineteen bright, young women!
We’re a repertory company. Dances accumulate. Some retire. Some live on through video. Some live on in the flesh. During our 15th anniversary season last year the Company brought back the much-loved, dynamic Volcano. This January 16 at the Alabama Dance Festival, in Birmingham, AL, the Kennesaw State University Dance Company gives the dance its Alabama premiere. Our classic duet Obsession makes its Tennessee debut at The Baylor School January 30 and 31.
March sees performances of Mapping at NYC’s Inception to Exhibition Dance Festival (March 12, New York); the international opening of the exhibition Pause at the Zuckerman Museum of Art (March 14, Kennesaw, GA); and at the Charlotte Dance Festival (March 23, Charlotte, North Carolina).
In 2007, the Company performed in Times Square as part of Dancers Responding to AIDS/Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS’ Summer Solstice event. Pictured: Stacy Martorana, Jamie Scott, Christian von Howard, Daniel Gwirtzman, Madeline Hoak and Corey Wright. A stellar cast!
