The Encore Project Begins: Winter 2017
This year Daniel Gwirtzman Dance Company celebrates the 10th Anniversary of our acclaimed hit Encore which premiered in 2007 at Manhattan’s Joyce SoHo. Since then Encore has continued to be performed and licensed by professional companies, pre-professional training programs, and college and arts high school dance departments. It has never fallen from the rep. Encore: The Show Has Legs! On February 23 the dance made its Florida debut at The University of Florida in Gainesville, opening night of a seven performance run at the Constans Theatre on the UF campus, lasting until March 2. The Gainesville Sun previewed the run.
On Saturday February 25 Encore made its North Carolina debut when the Charlotte Dance Festival Repertory Ensemble performed an excerpt of the work at the Blumenthal Performing Arts Center. An initiative called Blumenthal Celebrates presented dance ahead of a performance of the Twyla Tharp 50th Anniversary Tour, which performed at the Belk Theater on Saturday. The CDF Rep Ensemble and Encore opened the show for Twyla’s Company. Artistic Director Caroline Calouche was interviewed for the local news about the project. Gwirtzman’s energetic, jazzy dance makes its Charlotte premiere March 18 at Duke Energy Theater.
The Florida School of the Arts in Palatka, FL, part of St. John’s River State College, has also learned an excerpted form of the dance. The students will perform multiple times during a performance season in April. A fourth ensemble rehearsing the dance, PICTA Movement Collective, a troupe out of Beloit College in Wisconsin, will perform on March 25 at the John Michael Kohler Arts Center in Sheboygan, WI; April 9 at St. John’s on the Lake; April 21 at the Rock Prairie Montessori School; and later this spring on the Beloit College Campus.
