DGDC Receives $10K Grant from Rockefeller Brothers Fund

The Rockefeller Brothers Fund has allocated a grant of $10,000 to the NYC nonprofit toward the creation of an interactive educational digital resource geared toward a general viewership.

The project, Dance With Us, seeks to bridge the divide separating dance from mainstream culture, underscoring the primacy, purpose, and possibility of dance in contemporary life. Combining the instructional with the performative, the resource aims to increase the public’s knowledge of dance and their dance literacy, to share the love of dance, and to introduce ways to view, speak about, and participate in dance with comfort.

This project is deeply aligned with the Company’s core values, pedagogy, and programming, which has consistently gained acclaim. This digital resource will be distributed widely and freely, contributing to the Open Educational Resources movement (OER), in which knowledge is shared without cost, providing access to all.

Wyoming Performance: October 15-21

The Company’s 20th Anniversary Season continues this fall when we take our hit interactive show Welcome To The World of Dance on the road to the Whitney Center for the Arts in Sheridan, Wyoming as a featured main stage event in their 2019/2020 season. A narrated primer of how to view and speak about dance, Gwirtzman and Company present a range of acclaimed dances from the Company’s diverse, accessible, and entertaining repertory.

The New York Times called the show “a delightful introduction…explaining what contemporary choreography is all about. The dancers then take the lesson several thrilling steps further by inviting the young audience members to join in. By the time the last strains of the score from Saturday Night Fever were heard, most of the adults were on their feet, too.”

In Sheridan we’ll be working with various communities–elementary school children, high school, college students, and older adults–and incorporating them into the performance. A talkback follows, providing the audience the opportunity to gain insight into the program from hearing the choreographer’s, other collaborators’, and dancers’ perspectives, and then a highly energetic, dance workshop comprised of simple, easy-to-learn, folk and social dances. All will be invited to participate regardless of age, ability, or dance experience. Everyone can dance!
